Hey! I use twitted to beat back DTC genomic testing company hype.

I can't say that any of the above apply to me any more. Twitter is becoming too noisy to really know how to use any more. It's still useful to see what people are up to and to post what I'm up to but the shire volume of tweets to and fro has become unmanageable for most people.Time will tell where twitter will fall in the SM spectrum of usefulness.

Gwenn, the issue of noise is a big problem but it's certainly under our control. There are plenty of folks out there only following 50 people and it works for them. I think you need to design your feed for what you need. Like you I do struggle with what I want to derive from my Twitter time. And as time goes by I'm becoming more selective.

I am a brand new Twitter MD user (@drmattmurray) subsequent to a presentation on this social media at the TexMed 2009 Conference. I have decided that the best way for me to answer this question is to just get in there and try it for myself. I am not sure whether it will be a marketing tool (for my practice or for blogging), a personal social tool, a professional communication tool or something else. I suspect my use will morph over time as I discover where I get the most value for the time spent. I am starting out by using it in concert with a new blog regarding my interest in health information technology (www.digitizedmedicine.com). My concerns that will initially restrict my use and perhaps inhibit my use down the road revolve around the potential for medicolegal complexities/risk that perhaps I will wish to avoid until the degree of risk is more clearly delineated and clarified.
